One Image, One Story – Aurora Sub Sunset – Lee, IL

A fast BNSF intermodal train is frozen in time in a frozen landscape outside of Lee, IL on January 19th, 2020.

Sometimes people think I’m crazy because I like winter so much and I get grumpy when it’s not very winter-like out (yes, that would be Illinois for most of this winter). There’s a pretty simple reason for that — I love the photo opportunities that winter affords. There are the stark winter landscapes with bare trees and clean snow. And then there’s the light. The cold, dry air with low sun angles and landscapes turned into giant reflectors that bounce light around everywhere. You just can’t match that light the rest of the year. This shot would have been nice in summer. In winter, I’m even willing to forgive myself the compositional mistakes I made when I took this because the light is just so pretty.
