Equipment Journal: Pocket Sketchbook (Canon Elph 110 HS)

Amanda and I have been doing some household cleaning recently. During that process, she came across her stash of old point and shoot cameras. She put me in charge of going through them and seeing what was worth saving and what we could sell/donate. That might have been a poor decision on her part because the chances of me sending a camera out the door are remarkably low, LOL.

I was particularly smitten by a little black Canon Elph 110 HS. The thing is just so darn small and in black, I think it cuts a pretty sweet looking figure. With it’s 1/2.3 inch sensor, it’s never going to keep up with the rest of my digital gear but it offers a pretty nice focal length range from pretty wide to mildly telephoto (certain websites will say 24mm to 120mm equivalent but I’ve never liked the equivalency idea…for starters, this has a 4:3 aspect ratio sensor while the rest of my digitals are 3:2, so right from the get go, things aren’t directly comparable).

While I have to admit that I was just taken by it’s size and threw it on my belt on a whim today, I’ve already found a role for this diminutive little camera. Painters will often go out into the world with just a sketchbook or maybe a pochade box with some small panels to paint ideas en plein air. Those ideas sometimes get further refined on larger canvases in the artist’s studio. I’m finding this camera fills that role nicely when I’m walking and weather/lighting conditions aren’t cooperating. That was certainly the case this afternoon when I thought I’d have some cloudy/stormy skies to work with in Chicago. Alas, there were copious amounts of sunshine to spite me.

That being said, I stopped a few places and tried a couple of shots. Most are cliche shots that every photographer in Illinois has done (except me). Still, they give me an idea of what the scenes actually look like and I’m kind of refining ways to add my own spin to them when lighting and weather conditions are better.

I so enjoyed having this little pocket “sketchbook” with me that I think it’s going to become a permanent fixture on my belt!
